The 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand is now under way.

New Zealand Hosting the 2011 Rugby World Cup

After years of planning and preparation, promoting and ticket selling, the wait for New Zealanders is over. Last night the country witnessed the opening of the 2011 Rugby World Cup, the most spectacular sporting event ever to be held in New Zealand.
Many Kiwi New Zealanders became tired of the long build up, but in the week leading up to the opening ceremony and first game, pessimism turned to optimism as the excitement built.
New Zealand can feel proud of the work gone into this huge sporting event, where twenty of the best rugby teams in the world, including New Zealand's own men in black, the All Blacks, will take to the field and display their skills. Throughout the country celebrations and festivities are happening, wherever visiting teams are hosted and games being played. Even small towns and communities have become part of the Rugby Worls Cup fever.

Opening Ceremony for 2011 Rugby World Cup

The weather could not have turned out better, with Auckland turning on a brilliant Spring night. Watching the opening ceremony on television last night, one would have felt proud to be a New Zealander. The arrival of the Maori waka, or war canoes, the music by past New Zealand greats and the partying down on the Auckland waterfront started early in the evening.
The fireworks display at the opening ceremony left everyone feeling satisfied that New Zealand may be a little country, but we know how to turn on spectacular events. And the 2011 Rugby World Cup is going to be the greatest thing ever seen in New Zealand sporting history.
More than 60,000 people of all nationalities crammed into Eden Park for the opening ceremony and first game, while tens of thousands more partied in downtown Auckland.

New Zealand v Tonga, First Game

The first game, held at Eden Park, Auckland, straight after the opening ceremony was between New Zealand's All Blacks and Tonga. It was expected that the All Blacks would win their first game over their Pacific neighbours, but the Tongans are known to play a hard, physical game.
The game had moments of excitement, as well as moments of disbelief as both sides made mistakes. The final score, in New Zealand's favour was 41 -10.
This game will be followed today, Saturday, by games throughut the country, between Scotland and Romania, England and Argentina, France and Japan, Fiji and Nambia.
The 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand is now under way.
