Remember Bobby McFerrin's song "Don't Worry, Be Happy"? Well, prance down your street, throw your arms in the air and shout "Smile, everybody!," because today, March 20, 2014 is International Happiness Day.

International Happiness Day

Research has shown definitively that a smile can be priceless. It can cure what ails you, and a simple smile at the right time can produce wondrous happenings. You cannot defuse a negative or tense situation by yelling and screaming, but sometimes the simple gesture of turning up your lips can work wonders. Even a fake smile will release chemicals in the brain that trigger pleasure centers, and that's true for not only the person smiling but also for the person 'receiving' the smile..

How the doctor cured himself

Dr. Norman Cousins, back in the 1980's was diagnosed with terminal cancer, but he cured himself by watching Marx Brothers movies and laughing himself well. The body always reacts to emotion, and a good laugh triggers chemical changes in the brain's pleasure centers which apparently promote the healing process.

Look at the babies

We have all witnessed how babies react to instinctively to a smile. Dr. David Chamberlain is a pediatrician who has studied babies from the point of conception, and he has conducted exhaustive studies on infants. He reports that smile centers in the brain are active from a very early prenatal stage of development, and contrary to popular lore, early smiles are not all "gas."

My experiment

I ran a little experiment when I was out shopping between noon and 2 pm today. Walking through Safeway I made it a point to smile at everyone with whom I made eye contact. Almost to a person, virtually everyone I locked eyes with smiled back at me. Only a couple of male shoppers looked away from my gaze without smiling, probably because men are so conditioned in American society to think that if a man smiles at them he must be gay. Too bad their homophobia won't allow them to feel happy. For most of us who have not been so frighteningly conditioned, however, smiles are infectious.

Make every day a happiness day

If you examine all the photos that accompany this article and actually dwell on them for a minute or two, it will be impossible for you not to break into a smile. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we would all smile at each other a lot more? There is nothing more soothing to a dicey situation, or more comforting to one who needs comforting, than a heartfelt smile. I know that for me, the response is totally involuntary - every time someone flashes me a smile, I cannot help but give a smile in return.

We should resolve to make every day International Happiness Day. So turn that furrowed brow or frown into a smile. You'll be healthier and happier, and you will make others healthier and happier as well.

Good afternoon :) I like conducting random Davis polls, too. Smiling is one I have done, Steve. You are right, sometimes men do not smile - course it's probably because they mistook me for some aging cougar instead of a pollster... ~Marilyn

Excellent. If you find a person without a smile lend yours to him-used to be my credo.

Uplifting post Steve, thank you. Smiling and the response to it come naturally and we do not have to look further than a newborn baby. We tend to become needlessly gloomy as we age, but even severe reverses have to be smiled away as nothing lasts except the smile - some even leave with a smile as they depart! siva
