What happened to Sony's gaming console when the clock struck midnight on 28 February 2010....

PS3 bug

Sony announced on the first of March that all the older PlayStation 3 models is being effected by a type of Y2K error. The problem all started after 28 February 2010. Sony confirmed that the unit’s clock is to blame for this. The error made the console regard 2010 as a leap year and wanted to go on to 29 February instead of the 1st of March. Users reported their console’s time were reset to 1 January 2000, and some other to other obscure dates.

Some problems

This caused a lot of problems for the consumers. They couldn’t connect to the online network, some downloaded games couldn’t even be played even while not connected, the potential for data loss and off course a lot of angry gamers around the world which is not what Sony wants now (or any other time for that matter). Sony had some catching up to do in the gaming world regarding the amount of units sold. Luckily for owners of the new PlayStation 3 slim, this bug has no effect on their consoles – the problem only extends to the older models. Sony warned users to leave their console off or risk the loss of data and or trophies. They promised a fix within 24hours.

The solution

“The manufacturer state that if the date displayed is still wrong, just change the time manually or use synchronization through the Internet.” *
So the problem has been fixed, by changing the internal clock to the correct date according to reports on the internet, however some people on the internet added that no fix has been applied and it was just an temporarily solution and the problem could arise again in the near future. Maybe later a firmware update will be created to fully rectify the problem.
But as off now lots off users reports to be back online again and the machine is performing like normal. Fingers crossed then.

Hi Jimmy.
Did you lost data during the period of the problem, or after it was rectified? Also did you try to manually change the clock to the correct date and time? Let me know how it works out.
