Staying in Afghanistan For The Right Reason?

Pulitzer prize winning columnist Tom Friedman tells us why the United States should not leave Afghanistan just yet.

Brand New Ideas For Afghan Children in Secular Schools

A brand new school was being opened in the mountains of Afghanistan and Admiral Mike Mullen, U. S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was going to do the ribbon cutting honors. Pulitzer prize winning columnist Tom Friedman went along with him to Afghanistan to witness the event.

The group spent half a day in a helicopter to reach the new school in the mountainous region of Afghanistan in the village of Pushghar. The new school was one of forty-eight
being constructed using U. S. Government funding, in Afghanistan that Greg Mortensen, famous author of "Three Cups of Tea" is devoting his life to help build.
This is money well worth spending according to Mr. Friedman.

These schools and the education of the Afghan children is where the real war on terrorism is being effective, with the war of ideas in the Afghan society according to Mr. Mortenson and Mr. Friedman. This is where the fight to educate and open the minds of the children is taking place, they state in Mr. Friedman's article.

When an Afghan girl is educated they concur, and she becomes a mother, she will be much less likely to allow her son to become a militant or an insurgent. Mr. Mortenson states that it is no accident that the Taliban or its allies, have bombed, burned or shut down more than six-hundred and forty schools in Afghanistan as well as three-hundred and fifty in Pakistan of which 80% are schools for girls. In the Helmand Province, the deputy minister of education is quoted as saying the Taliban extremists have shut down seventy-five of the two-hundred and twenty-eight schools there in 2010.

Waging a war through promoting new ideas and concepts within Islam is where the real war on terrorism is being fought according to Friedman and Mortenson. To educate the children that there is a better way, not to engage in martydom and destruction of people and places, That the Muslim women can be empowered and open the way for the children to have a better life and future is a worthy cause they think.

The religious extremist's only objective according to Mr. Mortenson is to create isolation of the children to promote their violent ideas. They recruit among the illiterate and the impoverished in the society, the more the better. The Taliban want less schools and more mosques according to Mr. Mortenson, so he has devoted his life based on the Friedman article to building more secular schools in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. The secular schools will hopefully bring a new generation of children who will have a broader view of the entire world.

Looking at the young Afghan girls in front of the new school, clutching their new notebooks which Admiral Mullen had given them as if they were their first dolls, Mr. Friedman feels that this may be the war well worth fighting for. Seeing the children;s eyes he thinks it would be hard to say "Let's just walk away", not yet he states.

Hi there Jerry, It's a tough situation over there. I would like to see less troops there, with the schools still being built. Maybe, maybe? Take care.

Good article but I would stress that the ideas and concepts in islam are fine as they are. it is an open, peaceful religion which promotes respect of women. A few fundamentalists have twisted some passages to their own ends. i am not a muslim but I respect their principles as they currently are. Great read :D

Hi there Greenfaol, The problem comes forth when those who are very extreme cover themselves in the clothe of the Islamic religion and the separation of the two gets blurred. Thanks for your nice comment.Take care.

Moutainside, I believe gaining knowledge gives the individual freedom. By no means do we want to change them into Americans, we just want them too have a chance to be free with their own ideals is all.
Good read.
Thank you for sharing.:)

wow afghanistan -- we had a local fireman PVT BENJAMIN MOORE blown up on his way back to his camp-- just 2 days ago--- if they do not want their children educated who are we to make sure that happens -- this is definitely a country that is in like the bedrock age--meaning way behind in many things --i think children are the world-- but must we really give up our older children to--give them something their leaders do not want---?? tthat is my opinion!! as far as your article i enjoyed this information and well written!!!

Thanks deb for your kind comments. I for one would like to se our troops come home. I understand your point, but in this case the reason they want to try to make a difference in the children's thinking is because of our self-preservation instincts. If they can stop the recruitment of the young children to be suicidal bombers then we may end some of the murders of innocent people including many Americans. Take care.

Mountain, I live next door to Ft Benning. We have had many of our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Not one solider have I talked to has yet to tell me we are doing the wrong thing in either place. Maybe some might be upset about it, as war is never pretty. I saw the end of Nam in some ways when I was living in Guam, from 72-77. I saw the people flocking off of ships, planes and helicopters. I had a woman grab my arm and tell me thank you, I was all of 10 years old at this time. I believe in helping those that can not help themselves. I also get a lot of folks mad at me because, I saw what good came out of Nam. I saw it as my mother and other wives heled those injured get to a safe spot to sit. I witnessed hundreds of grateful people and that has been etched my mind since I was a young girl. I do not want us to be at war but, as we see so much injustice around the world, how can we just sit back and do nothing. Sorry I took so much of your space up, I just wanted to say, I think that most are doing it for the right reasons. Just my take.:)

Deb, You take care of yourself. I thought something was going on. I advise everyone as "Nurse Nellie" "o) to drink as much hot water as they can when sick and eat bananas to replace the potassium level. The hot water flushes out the toxins and helps you get better faster.
Take good care.
