The Super Bowl 2014 is not only a mega sports event but an extravaganza -one of its own kind.

Super Bowl LLXXLIII 2014.

On Sunday the 2nd Feb 2014 Super Bowl, the most prestigious sporting event in the USA was held in the MetLife stadium in New Jersey. The event, the grand finale of the NFL (National Football League) of the year was hosted jointly by the States of New York and New Jersey and held for the first time in an outdoor stadium when most of the country was in the grip of a severe cold wave with heavy snowfall a daily event.
The Super Bowl is the American football (different from the soccer) match between the champions of the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Denver Broncos and National Football Conference (NFC) champion Seattle Seahawks for the redoubtable Lombardi Trophy. The 32 teams playing professional Football the most popular game in the USA are divided into two groups –American Football Conference and National Football Conference. The season starts sometime in Sept and extends for 18 weeks. The winners of each group meet in the final-The Super Bowl.

.

Fans and enthusiasts.

Football is a fantastic spectator game in the USA with an average attendance for each game standing at about 66900. The Super Bowl holds the country in a severe Football frenzy for one week before the main event. In New York, various events are held during the week to build the tempo for the super event. The concert at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey followed by the Macy's fireworks, the "Super Bowl Kickoff Spectacular, Media Day at the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, to name a few, attracted large crowds of enthusiasts and fans during the whole week from January 29 to February 1. They enabled the public to participate in various NFL-related activities such as autographs, a 60 feet (18 m)high toboggan run, and photographs with the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Mass Transit Super Bowl

For the convenience of the spectators of this spectacular game, the State of New Jersey organized a mass transit system of trains. It emphasized and encouraged game attendees and other visitors to use public transportation to get to the game and other festivities throughout the region. The authorities concerned organized services, fares, schedules and maps to promote the use of metro area's trains, subways, light-rail, and buses during the Super Bowl Week.
.

Special security measures.

The Super Bowl is considered a level one national security event. The security measures arranged for the event, the players, and spectators are fantastic. Measures that merit mention are a 2.5 mile chain-link perimeter fence around the Meadowlands Sports Complex, limited and regulated access to the area around the stadium, screening passengers and fans with metal scanners and restrictions for parking and tailgate parties.
The area was patrolled on land, by air, and by water since it is surrounded by wetlands. More than 3,000 security guards and 700 police officers were on duty on game day. In addition, SWAT teams and snipers were located throughout the stadium. There was a no-fly zone and fighter jets patrolled the region. The security effort was overseen by a joint operations center a few miles away from MetLife Stadium, which was staffed by hundreds of people from 35 different agencies ranging from the CIA to the New Jersey Transit Police. No expense was spared and the security personnel were paid ten times the pay they would have earned on a normal day.

Halftime show

The major attraction of the game is the half time show. Bruno Mars, the popular singer performed along with Red Hot Chili Peppers to a thunderous applause. Mars performed the songs "Locked Out of Heaven", "Treasure", "Give It Away" (with Red Hot Chili Peppers), and "Just the Way You Are". This was the most watched in the history of the Super Bowl drawing in a record 115.3 million viewers, passing the record 114 million who watched Madonna perform two years earlier. Incidentally, Michael Jackson was the first superstar to perform during Super Bowl XXVII, and since then the league has continued to book big-name talent to hold the television audience.
Television
Super Bowl XLVIII, televised by Fox in the United States, attracted 111.5 million viewers, becoming the most-watched event in U.S. television history and surpassing the previous record of 111.3 million viewers who watched Super Bowl XLVI in 2012. The game was streamed online on PCs and tablets.
It was televised live all over the world with English commentary. Thanks to the wide coverage and record number of viewers the rates of advertisements were fixed phenomenally high. A 30-second advertisement was priced at $4 million. Super Bowl is used by advertisers to try their new ads for the year.

The game.

The game started with kickoff at 6:32 pm EST (UTC−05:00)
For the first time since Super Bowl XLIV (2010), and just the second time in twenty seasons, the number one seeds from each conference met in the league championship. The game featured the league's top offense (Denver) against the top defense (Seattle), the first time this has occurred since Super Bowl XXXVII (2003). The game began with Seattle's defense scoring two points on safety, the quickest score in Super Bowl history. Five-time NFL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Peyton Manning of the Broncos threw two interceptions in the first half, the second returned by Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith for a 69-yard touchdown. The Broncos trailed 22–0 at halftime and 36–0 towards the end of the third quarter. Seattle did not allow a score until the final play that quarter, and they held Denver to almost 30 points below their scoring average. The Seahawks defeated Denver Broncos by 43-8. The final margin of victory was the largest since Super Bowl XXVII (1993).
The trophy.
The coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy was awarded to the winning team Seattle Seahawks in a glittering ceremony in a deluge of green and blue confetti, the colors of the winning team.

The trophy.

Nicknames
Super Bowl XLVIII has earned a few unofficial nicknames, with the "Weed Bowl", "Bong Bowl”, and "Marijuana Bowl" being among the most prominent, from users of social networking websites and various news outlets as the home states of the Seahawks and Broncos (Washington and Colorado, respectively) were the first, and to date the only, two states to legalize marijuana for recreational use.
Lighter side.
Although called football, the players rarely use their feet to kick the ball. Secondly, the players mostly keep shuffling and hardly play. Lastly, the game mainly is to cart the odd shaped ball a mere hundred yards and touchdown the line so marked. Uninitiated I was, I thought it was a sheer waste of time and effort to accomplish little. However, since I am now residing in the USA, I keep my opinion to myself for my safety.

Nice way to cover the Superbowl from many different angles. Well done! I know you were worried about material -- and knew equally that any fears you had were unfounded. Welcome back, sir!!

My dear Mark,
Imagine almost 50% of the population watched the event on TV. You should see the enthusiasm of public to believe it. Even the EPL finals will not get such reception.

Nice review GVR. I have never watched this sport but I know how popular it is. Americans will not believe a cricket test match lasts five days and we used to have a rest day in between! siva

My dear Siva,
The football frenzy in the USA is much higher than what we see for cricket matches in India. The players are venerated and the teams have fans in millions. Ir is a different ball game altogether.
