Obituary for former teen idol Lesley Gore who died Monday.

Lesley Gore

Sixties pop singer Lesley Gore died February 16 as a result of cancer in a Manhattan hospital at the age of 68.

Gore is best known for her number one million selling hit song “It's My Party” in the pre-British invasion era of rock and roll. She recorded the hit song while still a teenager herself after being discovered by award winning producer Quincy Jones. Other Gore hits were “That's the Way Boys Are”, “She's a Fool”, “Maybe I Know”, “Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows”, “Judy's Turn to Cry”, and “You Don't Own Me”.

Years later Gore co-wrote “Out Here on My Own” from the movie “Fame” that earned her an Academy Award nomination and “Hot Lunch Jam”. She also co-wrote “My Secret Love” from “Grace of My Heart”.

Gore's music has appeared on dozens of television and film productions including the 1962 debut on “Vacation Time”, “Ski Party”, “Batman”, “The Ed Sullivan Show”, the movie “Fame”, the TV series “Fame”, “Hairspray”, “Beverly Hills 90210”, “Designing Women”, “The Simpsons”, “Cybil”, “The Woods”, “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”, “Glee”, and “American Horror Story”,

In the 90s Gore was a part of the Broadway production of “Smokey Joe's Cafe”.

In more recent years, she released her first album in 30 year with “Ever Since”, hosted a PBS documentary series called “In the Life” - a series on gay and lesbian issues - and had been working on a stage production of her life.

More than just a singer, Gore played the role of Catwoman's side-kick Pussycat in the hit TV series “Batman”.

She was born Lesley Sue Goldstein on May 2, 1946 in Brooklyn; but was raised in New Jersey. Her musical career began after she and her vocal coach made a demo which found its way to Mercury Records and Quincy Jones. In a series of events that are unheard of today, Gore recorded the album and had a hit within a week; within two months she released her debut album. Gore recalls waking up and finding fans camped out in the front yard of the family home. After high school, she attended the all girl school Sarah Lawrence College where she studied drama and literature.

Gore is survived by her partner of 33 years Lois Sasson, brother Michael, and mother Ronnie.
