This is a story of how a large corporation carelessly affected the lives of thousands of people. It raises the question of the long term effects of the disaster.

The River

The Elk River in West Virginia originates in Pocahontas County, a place filled with natural beauty. It is an outdoorsman's paradise. It is the home of the endangered diamond darter fish. The river has long been known for trout fishing. It runs for 172 miles, sometimes underground, and empties into the Kanawha river at Charleston. It provides drinking water to thousands of people throughout central and southwestern West Virginia. It is truly one of West Virginias treasures.
Freedom Industries stores thousands of gallons of lethal chemicals in 14 storage tanks located on the banks of the Elk River near Charleston and just one mile up river from American Waters drinking water intake and distribution center. On January 9th 2014 a leak from those tanks dumped more than 7000 gallons highly toxic chemicals into the Elk River rendering the drinking water unsafe for those thousands of residents.

Neither Federal nor West Virginia regulators have inspected this sight since 1991. A disaster happened because regulations were not imposed or not enforced, probably both. We know the immediate affects of this carelessness. We don't yet know the long term ramifications. The Elk River empties into the Kanawha River a very short distance away. The Kanawha empties into the Ohio River, not that far downstream. No one knows the damage yet to come or how long it will linger. Who pays for this carelessness? There is plenty of blame to go around. But it is the blameless who suffer.

Freedom Industries? Sounds like a misnomer if ever there was one. I fear for the future as more people add more burdens like this.
