The Climate Deception Dossiers

It turns out that the fossil fuel industry knew long before the rest of us that their extractions were causing global warming, and that they embarked upon a deliberate disinformation campaign to confuse the public and cast doubt upon climate change.

The deniers

Wikinut writer LeRain has published more than a score of articles in which she claims that climate change - global warming - is a hoax. She has either been duped by or is part of the disinformation campaign foisted upon us by the fossil fuel industry to get us to believe global warming is not happening, despite all of the evidence that is right in front of our faces.

As this is being written, more than 350 wildfires are scorching Alaska, and over 4000 are burning in Canada. Weather patterns are changing drastically. Anchorage registers temperatures warmer than Atlanta and Dallas. Record rain falls in the South and East, while California continues bone dry. Record heat all over Europe. This year hotter than last, last year hotter than the one before, that one hotter than the one before that, and so on. Thirty-five thousand walruses beach themselves in Alaska, since the ice that supports their effort to feed has disappeared. Sea lion pups starve in California because their food source has fled north as the Pacific waters have warmed. The list goes on and on.

Now, the Union of Concerned Scientists, by obtaining memos and e-mails from the world's biggest fossil fuel companies - BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Conoco, Peabody Energy, Phillips and Shell - spanning the course of twenty-seven years, provides us with the proof that these companies have known climate change is real, that it is caused by burning fossil fuels, and that said companies have engaged in a propaganda and disinformation campaign to convince us all otherwise.

The Climate Deception Dossiers

"Big Oil knew. Big Oil lied. And Planet Earth got fried." - Jon Queally

The documents, obtained through leaks, through lawsuits, and through the Freedom of Information Act, show that:

1) Companies have for decades deliberately spread climate disinformation.

2) Corporate leaders knew that their products were extremely harmful to people and the planet, while still actively deceiving the public by denying the harm.

3) The campaign of deception is ongoing, as some of the documents have surfaced as recently as this year.

Internal memos that have surfaced and been brought to light categorically prove that discussions were being held inside fossil fuel company corporate offices beginning in 1981 about the reality of the threat of global warming and what to do about it. This was a full seven years before NASA scientist James Hansen's testimony before Congress about the imminent dangers of global warming.

These revelations brought forth by the Union of Concerned Scientists categorically put the lie to the climate change deniers' claims that global warming does not exist. Now, since we know that the fossil fuel companies acknowledged the reality of planetary warming decades ago, we can hopefully stop debating what is a bogus issue and get on with the business of trying to save humanity, as well as untold numbers of living beings with whom we share this planet. It is not an overstatement to assert that if we continue with business as usual, we, and a myriad of our fellow creatures, are doomed to extinction.

As they say about Rachel Maddow I say about you: you let the facts shape your opinion, not the other way around.

What drives me crazy about all of this is that there are still people saying that it is not true. You can just look at how the seasons have changed over the years and know, that there is much truth to it.

Yes. Just check out the comments section in any of the articles LeRain writes for Wikinut that deny global warming.

Well said, Steve.

It is interesting to note a similar pattern here to that of the debate over smoking and health. The evidence that smoking caused cancer was known to "big tobacco" for many years, during which they spouted all sorts of guff about "unsupported accusations" and "lack of proof" and paid politicians to fight their corner in Congress.

It is also interesting to note that some of the "cancer deniers" were the very same people who are "climate change deniers" today!

Propagating ignorance seems more of a religion than a misdemeanor.
Worst thing is the "Big people" are getting "bigger" day by day.

It would have been impossible for me to plagiarize from wikkorg.wordpress.org or from disinfo.com since I have even never heard of either site, so you must be making this stuff up. I based my article on information from the Union of Concerned Scientists website. I summarized what they reported, and if you want to call that plagiarism, so be it. I would think you have better things to do than to make such false accusations as you have done here.

If a common source is quoted by four other people, that cannot imply that one of those people is plagiarizing all the other three!
