The Curious Case of The New York Knicks

The National Basketball Association's 66 game regular season is winding down, and the quest for
the Larry O' Brien trophy will begin when the playoffs start on April, 28th. Sure there will be a lot of
talk about the contenders, the Heat, Bulls, Lakers, Thunder, and Spurs, but the most talk may be reserved for a team who may wind up only being the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference,
the New York Knicks.

Soap Operas are almost a thing of the past in our society, there are only three left on major network television, So anyone still recovering from that All My Children cancellation can turn to Gotham City's basketball team to get their fix.

The Knicks have been one topsy turvy roller coaster ride this shortened season. It started with extreme optimism, building on last year's playoff appearance, their first in seven years. It was quickly stymied by inconsistent play and injuries to the team's two highest paid players in Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire.Out of those ashes rose an unhearled Golden State Warriors reject name Jeremy Lin, and thus Linsanity was born.

Lin became the Knicks starting point guard, sparking them, the city of New York, the entire Asian-American Community, and basketball fans everywhere. Everything was right with the world, but as that guy on late night infomercials says “But wait... there's more”. Anthony and Stoudemire returned throwing off team chemistry to the point where it would ultimately force Coach Mike D'Antoni into a jump or I'll push you of the ledge type resignation, and all of sudden the ghost of Isiah Thomas was lurking around Madison Square Garden.

The 2011-12 version of The New York Knicks, like Dr. Marlena Evans however just refuse to die. Mike Woodson took over as Coach and has instituted a defense first mentality and the aformentioned Mr. Anthony is playing like a legitimate M.V.P. Candidate for the first time in his career, particularly with Stoudemire and Lin this time beset by injuries. What Anthony may not realize is that the pressure is just now beginning to mount.

For all of the hype around Carmelo Anthony's career he has only advanced past the first round of the N.B.A. Playoffs once during his now 9 year career. Now playing for George Karl is no easy task, but Anthony is in danger of becoming the new Tracy McGrady, a player with unbeliveable individual talent, but lacking the qualities of a team leader that ultimately make a difference.

From his contentious parting of the ways with the Denver Nuggets, to his fingerprints figuratively being on D' Antoni's deadbody, Anthony is at the produce or get off the pot moment of his career, and down the stretch of this season he has been mostly producing. The return of Amare and possibly Lin, may aid him in his efforts, but if the Knicks find themselves meekly succoming to Lebron James, Dywane Wade and the Miami Heat, in the first round we will be having this conversation again, all summer and into next year. Then Anthony and the Knicks will find themselves in the same boat as General Hospital, wondering if they will be renewed or cancelled.
