Background of the parade and how it came to be. What the 2015 version had in store for parade goers.

The parade


The 60th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade 2015 will be held on Saturday, March 14th. It all begins at 9:00am. at Chicago River with the dyeing ceremony when the entire river is dyed emerald green. The actual parade will begin at noon and will run along Columbus Drive between Balbo Drive and Monroe Street. Proceeding north along Columbus River with the viewing stand in front of the Buckingham Fountain where the parade will broadcast on ABC-Channel 7.

It is sponsored by the Chicago Plumbers Local 130 U.A. Jim Coyne is the Gereral Chairman of the parade as well as Business Manager of the Plumbers Local 130 UA. The Grand Marshall is Willima P. Hite who is the General President of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters, represented by 370,000 members in skilled piping trades in the U.S., as well as Canada and Australia. He is dedicated to increasing the nation's competitiveness in the manufacturing and energy sectors.

Guests of Honor this year will be the Chicago Fire Department Local 2, and the Chicago Poilice Department Lodge #7 of the Faternal Order of Police. .

There are actually three parades on Saturday in the area. One in Milwaukee that also starts at noon and starts at 3rd Street and Wisconsin Avenue. One in Racine beginning at noon at State and Main. Others in the area included are Sturgeon Bay, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, and Prairie du Chien.

The 2015 South Side Irish Parade will be held the next day, Sunday March 15th. It begins at noon from 103rd and proceed down Western Avenue to 115th Street. This is a family friendly event with no alcohol open or consumed along the parade route.

With pub crawls, neighborhood family festivals and several parades this is a great time to be visiting the Windy City. What a way to celebrate Irish traditions and culture.
