Largest solar thermal plant: The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System

It’s incredible if there’s a largest solar plant on this planet. The world’s Largest Solar Thermal Plant is located in the Mojave Desert. This largest solar thermal plant is aims to provide the energy to Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) which provides power to parts of Northern California, US. If the plant is fully functioning, it will produce around 377 megawatts of energy. This largest solar thermal plant called The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System. The massive project of The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System stretched at more than 1400 hectare public land and that’s a massive. This largest solar thermal plant wills double the amount of commercial solar thermal energy in the US.

The largest solar thermal plant in Mojave Desert is not using typical solar panels we usually see. But instead, it is using mirrors to capture to the energy from the sun. There are 300,000 mirrors that all arrayed in ring of around three huge towers. The mirrors are used to reflect sunlight onto vats of water sitting that placed on top of the giant towers. It then heated to 500 degrees to powering a steam turbine. This renewable energy is enough to provide power for 140,000 homes.

The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System is intended for replacing coal fire power plants. The giant company Google has been invested their money for this renewable energy projects. They put around $168 millions for The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System. Google invest in many renewable energy projects like wind and solar energy projects. The renewable energy projects are also intended to protect the environment in order to remain tenable. This huge solar thermal plant gets its name from the Ivanpah Valley of the Mojave Desert. California needs a goal to get 33 percent of the power from renewable energy by 2020. Beside Google, other companies also invest for this renewable energy such as NRG, and BrightSource.
