They want us to discuss

Aren't we helping spread awareness about Islamic State and other racial hatred when we discuss it?

Have we become marketing tools for criminals of all description?

Is condemning hate crimes really helping? We are merely expressing our opinions out here. That is, our stand on the issue. But we move on. It does not make an iota of difference to the terrorist what we think or we don't. What these terrorists want is to create a fear in our minds, and that they know our discussions manage to instill in us. That fear is their power.

We move on from one issue to another

Social networking sites have made all of us wise persons. But who is going to bell the cat? By that I don't mean let us take arms and rush towards middle east. By that, I mean, when we pick an issue, we need to spend time thinking of a solution to the problem. Our thoughts are more powerful. If the terrorist is resorting to sending fear down our spines from that far, we need to do something that makes him or her feel like a freak and hesitate to do anything that will get others attention.

It is solutions that we need

I was reading the discussion about confederate flag. I feel by making youngsters aware of it, the world has unwittingly increased the strength of the likes of Ku Klux Klan. Internet and social media are much more powerful than we want to acknowledge. Filtering and regrouping of like-minded folks has become easier with such technologies. As of now there are no technologies available for controlling the reach of social media. So the next racist may be born within our homes because there is ample "enlightenment" in support of it on the net. True or fabricated. Who cares. There is no way to stop such things.

I would love solutions being put forth

Everybody has them in mind. Like one of the members suggested we ban those, and another member suggested that others visit his community. We need to discuss solutions, and see the best and refined ones through as a team I suppose.

The reason to discuss this is to ensure that we are prepared to fightback against such horrors. I do not believe that discussing an issue will give the wrong doers any strength, quite the reverse it says the voice of opposition will be loud and clear.

I want it discussed too. But I want concrete solutions suggested so that we can implement them. For now, we just say it is bad. That I don't think is making any difference. We may be saying it loud and clear, but I know of a case against dowry, on facebook, so much hue and cry was made, and it just petered away after a few days. Nobody bothered to come up with rallies and taking a stand till something was done. Such things disillusion me.

I agree that writing is first step. But we are quick to divert our attention because media throws one topic too many at us each day. To top it all, we have our hectic lives to manage. Even if we do not come up with immediate answers, we do need to spend a tad more time on it to get the problem resolved for good. When we discussed that dowry case, it was decided that we will all buy candles and wear white clothes for a week and walk the roads disturbing the traffic till something was done against burning brides. Unfortunately a new topic came up ..about muslims being killed in Burma, and suddenly the issue fizzled out. It sure left a bad taste in my mouth because I felt we had enough steam to get something done about dowry deaths.

Writing about it is always a good first step. Not everyone has the immediate answers and changing others is the toughest of propositions.

There should be no ban on free speech of any kind. And we should particularly not be afraid to talk about ISIS and Islamic terrorists. Too bad if someone gets offended. The fact of the matter is these violent groups are doing exactly what Hitler did decades ago and we need to be vocal about the fact that it's wrong, stand against it, fight back, and if someone's itty-bitty feelings get hurt in the process. TOO BAD

Here, it is not about being offended. More about alignment. There are too many tools working online. So if a person is inclined to be racist, tracing others with similar views has become easier. So what I wanted was, discuss but take it to the point that some solution is put forth.

Yes, like Vandana rightly says it is a question of aligning ourselves along the positive side of axis that separates terrorists from decent people, vice lovers from genuine people with established standards so on and so forth.

Like my granny used to say, "If you cannot or will not separate your positives from your negatives, you should let someone else do your shopping".
Money is going down the drains because there are too much negative values in society.
Respect, money and time become worthless and we are left scratching our heads...is that not what the terrorists want?

Of course we all draw the line, the axis at different places.

Yes, that is what the terrorists want. If we group ourselves, as good people, they get to group themselves as bad people. Even if their numbers are fewer, they have weapons, and with group expanding, they can do more damage. That is why, when we pick a subject, we should take the discussion to a level that a solution or possible solution is churned out. That way, even if we can't implement it, at least it would be in the minds of many, who may discuss it elsewhere and in physical world. When the time comes, we would have a way to stand united on one principle, and get the problem removed from root. That is what I meant to say. Unfortunately, I could not express it as well as you understood. lol

the technology is here to prevent certain things from getting on the internet. china uses that technology to prevent citizens from knowing what is going on in the outside world.

Sure, but the US can prevent such things within the country. Can it do in our country as well? Effectively, ISIS and Taliban can use the technology to find like minded people and recruit them. In the US, it may be the racists. We the ordinary citizens do not expect such group formation, otherwise, ISIS would not have taken us by surprise. I have always wanted a suggestion and a solution that would prevent rise of another Hitler. So far, I have not found anything on that front.

It is a fight for the minds in the end but with weapons of mass destruction abounding it is only a matter of time before few wreak havoc and then the world will be awake for few days.

I think the good has to press on and stay united and not get divided by petty issues as it happens now. Certain issues are above diversionary tactics and have to be dealt with pronto. If the big powers unite then half the battle is won but that never happens - siva

You bring a nice point to the table. We have to unite too. When we discuss and leave it, without solving the problem, we have already told the "bad" we have other priorities, and when the need to unite surfaces, we may not be around.

Earlier it was Germany, Japan as enemies. Now Russia and China - it is all in our minds.

The common citizen everywhere sees only others with similar yearnings to lead a peaceful life - siva
