NASA MODIS Rapid Response System satellite imagery from 7th Jan 2010 shows almost the entire UK mainland under a blanket of snow and ice.

About the NASA MODIS Rapid Response System

The MODIS Rapid Response System was developed to provide daily satellite images of the Earth's landmasses in near real time. The images are of particular interest to anyone studying on-going weather phenomenon.

A daily selection of images picked for inclusion in an online gallery, and are all available in high resolution here.

UK blanketed by snow

At 11:50am on Jan 7th 2010 (UK time) the MODIS system returned this amazing image of the UK. I've never seen such a high percentage of the mainland covered by snow and ice. Click on the image for a link to a much higher resolution version, or visit NASA's page here.

Will we all turn into snowmen?

The UK media are in full hysteria, advising us to prepare for the forthcoming snowy apocalypse. Maybe our best option is to all start thinking like snowmen, I'm already seeing them everywhere I look.
