Northern Ireland's Forensic Service launches new DNA profiling service

News - Department of Justice issue press release on new DNA service

NORTHERN Ireland’s Forensic Service has become the first forensic team to use the new DNA profiling service DNA 17.

Justice Minister for Northern Ireland, David Ford, recently announced in a departmental press release that Forensic Science Northern Ireland’s (FSNI) are now using the new service.

DNA 17 will replace the current DNA profiling system. It is claimed by the Department of Justice in their press release to be more sensitive and robust, meaning that DNA profiles may now be found where previously they may not have been discovered. The old system provided analysis on 11 aspects of DNA. The new system will provide analysis on 17, meaning more information for forensic scientists to work on.

Making the announcement via a departmental press release, Mr Ford said: “This is a very exciting time for DNA profiling in Northern Ireland. From now on, better information will be available to the courts. DNA 17 is so sensitive that a DNA profile can be obtained from just one or two human cells and from areas where it would not have been possible before.

“FSNI is the first forensic science provider in the United Kingdom to launch DNA 17. Today confirms my commitment to investing for the future and providing faster and fairer justice for the community in Northern Ireland”

In the notes to editors of the press release it is said: "FSNI’s primary function is to provide science in support of Justice. In doing so, it deploys a wide range of scientific techniques, backed by over 30 years of experience."
