We Do Not Belong To Caesar

Like all citizens Christians are legally and righteously obligated to pay taxes. BUT Christians are NOT subjects of the government (Caesar) like the unbelieving tax payers are. This article explains the difference.

Government Are Like A Caesar

Matthew 22:15-22 tells one of many confrontations between Jesus and unbelieving Jews. They were wanting to entrap Jesus so they would have legal cause to destroy Him. They asked this question of Jesus: “…What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar or not?

Jesus requested of the conniving Jews a coin that would be tax money. After looking at the coin Jesus asked them to identify the image on that coin. They identified the image on the coin as that of Caesar. It is Jesus’ reply that reveals a great truth for Christians. Jesus said: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21

PONDER THIS DEAR CHRISTIANS. The coins rightfully belonged to Caesar. They were made under his authority and the people were obligated to pay taxes. Unbelievers who paid taxes with Caesar’s money also belonged to Caesar. They were his subjects. BUT believers who performed their responsibility of paying taxes to Caesar did NOT belong to Caesar. They belonged to God.

Christians who pay taxes to Caesar (our government) who mints or prints our money do NOT belong to Caesar. We belong to God and King Jesus. The Apostle Paul passionately pleaded this truth. “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” I Corinthians 6:19-20

Let us look at the act of paying taxes today. If Christians are bound by man’s law and God’s righteousness to pay taxes should we not also be bound to elect honest and responsible officials to control and dispense our tax money? Need it be said that our government is an extremely prodigal Caesar? Revelations of our government’s frivolous and wasteful spending of tax money seem endless.

Questions: Do you believe that our government should tax sparingly and spend wisely? Doesn’t it seem reasonable for tax-paying voters to demand the government to operate within a balanced budget? Unfettered government spending is bankrupting America and creating an economical environment in which it grows more difficult for Americans to adequately provide for their families.

American voters must cease electing politicians who will not vow to maintain fiscal sanity in government. That goes for Christians too. We are American citizens affected by the financial policies of our government. I don’t know about you but I will not vote for government aspirants who will not strive to maintain a fiscally healthy America.

Remember, Christians do NOT belong to Caesar - we belong to our Savior Jesus Christ. We are not bound to vote for irresponsible and ungodly politicians. By not doing so we cast a vote for Christ and His kingdom.

I thank you for reading and may GOD BLESS YOU.

Phil, I don't wish to sound as if I am contradicting you every time I write a comment , but if all Christians refused to vote , then how would this make for better government ? Plus we are told that as Christians we are in the world but not of it , and yes , I agree that more diligence should be maintained by governing bodies as to how they spend the money they gain from taxes , but making sure that is put into practice is another matter , and I feel that years of mismanagement has now resulted in an irreversable dilemma that no government will be able to undo .
i pray the Lord will return soon to undo all the mess .
Bless you
