Willie Nelson has joined forces with the Natural Resources Defense Council to produce a public-service television spot which is a powerful indictment of mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia.

Willie sings "America the Beautiful"

The rocks and mud from the bare hills cascade down the mountainsides of Appalachia to the hollows and into their streams below, filling them with silt. A once-pristine land now lay barren, made ugly and unlivable in the name of progress and profit. No profit for the folks who live there, however.

In the video below, Willie Nelson renders a plaintive version of "America the Beautiful" while scenes of magnificent beauty juxtaposed against scenes of brutal destruction flash across the screen. The destruction virtually jumps out at you. The under-two-minute video must be seen for the reader to fully understand the impact mountaintop removal mining has on local communities in the region.

I agree with both Jerry and Mariah here Steve .
How foolish mankind can be
How shortsighted ...
How utterly destructive ..
It beggers belief .
Thank you for sharing this with us here .
Bless you

Good morning, Steve, yet again, we destroy the very things that sustain us in the long term for a short term gain. Yet, if you asked most Americans to give up something even for a day to conserve or change attitudes, many would be reluctant. The contrast - and that is a mild word for the effect, between the child swinging and then the swing set in the sludge and mud was a poignant reminder of who we are harming through our greed and outright disregard for what sustains us. Thank you as always for a well done reminder of how far removed we have become from our earth. ~Marilyn

The song and the singing is beautiful but what's happening in the name of progress is terrible.
