It seems that with each passing day the NSA is exposed as a rogue, out-of-control agency that spies on every one of us with impunity, and that there is no end to what they are capable of doing.

They trust no one

In the eyes of the National Security Agency, we are all suspect, and not one of us can be trusted. With the blessing of both the Bush and Obama administrations, the NSA has been allowed to become the principle arm of the surveillance state, and we are now no different from places like China in terms of how the government sees its citizens. Not one of us is to be trusted. Not ever. Therefore as much data as possible must be collected on every citizen, each of whom in the eyes of the government is a potential terrorist.

Facial recognition technology

Today, June 1, 2014, it was revealed by journalists James Risen and Laura Poitras in the New York Times, through documents provided by Edward Snowden, that the NSA is collecting millions of facial images of American citizens through its surveillance program for use in facial recognition technology.

Have you uploaded a photograph of yourself on Facebook? Have you sent photos of yourself by e-mail? The NSA is now in possession of those pictures. According to Sarah Lazare, writing today for commondreams.org, "Secret documents exposed by NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden reveal that the spy agency views facial recognition technology as the next frontier of surveillance and uses new software technology to obtain facial recognition images from digital communications, including e-mails, social media, and even text messages."

According to the report in the New York Times, "The agency intercepts 'millions of images per day' - including about 55,000 'facial recognition quality images' - which translate into "tremendous untapped potential."

An internal NSA document obtained by the Times, dated 2010, states "It's not just the traditional communications we're after. It's taking a full-arsenal approach that digitally exploits the clues a target (we are all targets) leaves behind in their regular activities on the net to compile biographic and biometric information" that can help "implement precision targeting."

Risen and Poitras also report that the NSA is not the only agency using this new technology. The State Department, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, as well as state and local police are now employing the technology.

The government has now put it in writing that we are all targets. We now live in a nation that has become an Orwellian nightmare, where Big Brother tracks our every move - every e-mail we write, every picture we post on the internet, where we go, who we talk to....It would be no surprise if soon they'll be flying drones past our bedroom windows.

Smile, you're on Candid Camera!

I hope they get my best side! ;) I smile but it really is not a laughing matter for some people -- like Snowden.

Snowden is a hero, but the Obama administration considers him a traitor for exposing their nefarious deeds.

Of course they believe that they are above the law, yet the law is supposed to protect the people. I am not sure we are able to call our society civilized, people may be civil to each other, but to call ourselves a civilization we must take a leap beyond spying and mistrust.

This is a civilization in the process of collapsing, and yes, authority indeed believes it is above the law. We see it every day - Obama unleashing drones, cops brutalizing peaceful demonstrators, the list goes on and on. Thanks for commenting Grant.
